Elizabeth Phillips
Preschool Receptionist
ephillips@joyschool.org

Elizabeth Phillips was born in Georgetown, Guyana (formerly British Guiana), South America, and can be considered as being from the Caribbean because of the similar history and culture that Guyana shares with the rest of the Caribbean.  Elizabeth grew up in a Christian home where she and her family belonged to the Anglican (Episcopal) Church.  Her parents were devoted workers in the Church and Church-related organizations.

Elizabeth obtained a B.A. in History (Upper Second Class Honors) at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Jamaica, and a post-graduate Diploma in Education from UWI.  It was here that she met her husband of 39 years, Winston Phillips.  They have three children:  Judith, married, with two young girls, living in Flagstaff, AZ, with her husband, Ben;  Rachel Oneika, who is single and lives in NY;  and Karen, married, with one toddler, living in Barbados with her husband, Teddy.

Elizabeth also obtained 6 credits towards a Master’s degree in History at the Pennsylvania State University.  Later she obtained certificates in University Administration from the University of Manchester, England, and the University of Warwick, England, respectively.

Elizabeth started her working life as a High School teacher of History and English.  After two years, she changed careers and became a University Administrator, working as an Asst. Registrar, Admissions, at the University of Guyana for many years, and then as Senior Asst. Registrar.  On moving to Grenada, her husband’s home, she worked as a Project Officer in the Industrial Development Corporation, analyzing applications for investment in Grenada.

While in Grenada, she was closely associated with several volunteer activities in St. George’s Anglican Church and it was here that her faith walk began to grow as she became involved in Small Groups.  Her Christian journey continued as she moved to other countries where she did Bible studies, and volunteered in charitable organizations that helped children and young adults in less fortunate circumstances.

On her husband’s retirement in 2003, they relocated from Barbados to Arizona in order to be closer to their grandchildren.  It was while her eldest granddaughter, Samantha, was attending Joy Preschool that Elizabeth was made aware of an opening as a Receptionist at the Preschool and Elizabeth began working at the Preschool in late February 2004.  Elizabeth’s association with Joy Christian Preschool, the Precious Moments Women’s group, and immersion in Beth Moore Bible Studies have increased her understanding of God’s Word and demonstrated the joys of Christian fellowship.  In November 2006, Elizabeth became a baptized member of the Community Church of Joy.

Elizabeth is the Receptionist at Joy Preschool, communicating with parents about the Preschool.  Her duties also include preparing Preschool staff payroll information for transmission to the Payroll Department and other duties relating to new staff hires and resignations.  Elizabeth considers herself very blessed to be working in a Christian environment which encourages weekly prayer with her colleagues.
