English 1: Introduction to Themes in Literature/Composition
(Grade 9)
The purpose of this foundational course is to develop the core skills
and strategies necessary to become critical and thoughtful writers
and readers. Introductory literary units will focus on a variety of
themes; the short story, the novel, drama and poetry will be studied.
In addition, the skills needed for real-life reading will also be taught.
To prepare students for a lifetime of writing, a significant amount
of time will be spent on the correct usage of the English language
through grammar, mechanics, and vocabulary development.
English 2: Themes in Literature/Composition (Grade 10)
This course contains a review of the reading and writing skills introduced
in English 1 with further development through the analysis of both
fiction and nonfiction. Students will again have the opportunity
to explore literature written by both classic and contemporary authors.
Writing and language skills will be further developed as well.
English 3: American Literature/Composition (Grade 11)
This course is designed to further develop and refine skills in reading,
writing, grammar, and vocabulary. Although all forms of writing will
be addressed, the topic research paper will be a major focus. The
literary emphasis will be on American literature incorporating developmental,
classic, and recreational reading.
English 4: World Literature/Composition (Grade 12)
This course is designed to prepare students for college level English.
Units of study include literature, history, and cultures from around
the world; compositions will include college essays and the analytical
essay as well as creative pieces. Grammar, mechanics and vocabulary
will again be an integral part of the course, with the overall goal
being to develop critical reading and writing skills.
Other Literature/Writing Courses
Additional courses in the areas of creative writing and literature
will be available through online courses or dual credit programs.
